Celebrate creativity and self-expression through calligraphy.
The St. Louis Calligraphy Guild, founded in 1980, is a non-profit organization enjoyed by people who love alphabets and mark making materials. We range from complete beginners to professional artists, fountain pen enthusiasts and students, with most somewhere in between. As a group, we strive to learn and practice calligraphic letter forms while enjoying the friendships that evolve from diving into the creative process together.
The Board of Directors, elected annually, oversees our calendar, planning hands-on projects for meetings, workshops and outings into the community. Open to visitors at no cost, our monthly meetings are as varied as our members. You will discover calligraphers are among the most welcoming folks, eager to share their materials and knowledge. See for yourself! We offer fall and spring workshops each year which are open to everyone. First time participants may pay half price! All skill levels are welcome! Our workshop instructors include both local experts and internationally renowned calligraphers.
Membership is open to anyone regardless of one’s calligraphic ability. Discover the benefits of $30 annual membership by joining us for educational and social events.
Twice the Saint Louis Guild has sponsored the annual International Conference of Calligraphy and the Book Arts, first in 1997 and again in 2004. The Guild has also participated in the Textured Images Exhibit at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, as well as presented a special 25th Anniversary Exhibit displaying the art of various instructors who taught workshops in St. Louis during the first 25 years. The Guild also actively participated in the national Association for the Calligraphic Arts.
The St. Louis Calligraphy Guild is a non-profit 501c (3) corporation, formed to promote cooperation and communication among calligraphers, calligraphy teachers, students and others involved in lettering and book arts. The Guild is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of Calligraphy and related arts, to the expansion of opportunities for education of children and adults in Italic handwriting, and calligraphy lessons in other letter forms, plus an appreciation and application of written forms.
The Guild is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes, including promotion of the study and practice of Calligraphy as a craft and art form, to encourage excellence, to foster appreciation of its history and application, and to sponsor activities, seminars and workshops.
Educational opportunities include classes in calligraphy for beginners, workshops, lectures and meetings with demonstrations and hands-on activities. Our workshops are taught by renowned calligraphers covering various alphabets, techniques, and decorative elements. In addition, members often take workshops offered by neighboring guilds and participate in national conferences.. Sharing our work is a growth experience for all when we exhibit. All members are encouraged to display their work.
